I have come to the conclusion that my topic is too broad, I am altering it to focus on what happens after the birth of a preemie. To do this I am going to focus on the steps that need to be taken for parents, risks the child is at, and treatment options. Specifically focusing on Apnea in premature babies.
While in class today we "speed dated", during this time class members conveyed their topic(s) and received feedback. I received a lot of help doing this, I now know how I want to refine my question and where I want to directly focus my attention. The most important feedback I got and the feedback I will use the most is the idea that I should compare states. Doing this will open up my question to a wider region, asking if Vermont achieved such a low birth rate because of the size or if we truly are taking precautions that need to be followed by others. I also received the idea of comparing Vermont to a state like Colorado, where marijuana is legal. I think I provided a lot of really helpful feedback to my peers, specifically I think I had a good outlook on how to get directly involved with our community and connect it to the rest of the country.
Feedback: Renee: Chose specific question Molly: Research statistics based on state size and see if that contributes Johami: Ask personal questions to those who have been through it Mia: look at regional trend and how they effect the rates and why they are at higher risk. Go on Mass generals website and see if they have resources. Masha: Chose another state to directly compare it to. Olivia: Is vermont clean? does it have effect on our birth rates? Contact Ashley Boucher at WIC Evan: Research drug use in other states compare to VT. Stephan: Loook at aids and quality of life, and VT'S population of youth. In our every day life we are constantly under the impression that we need to act a certain way, based on our gender. Males are constantly told to be tough and suck up their problems and females are told to let out their feelings, and that its okay to get upset. Studies show that women DO handle situations very differently from men, such a stress, anger, and/or anxiety, however this could be because of stereotypes. Gender stereotypes are shown to have a direct correlation to the mental and physical health of men and women. Women who are overly expressive of their feelings have a high chance of anxiety and depression, whereas men who suppress their emotion have a high chance for indulging in risky behavior such as drug and alcohol use and they also have a high risk of heightened blood pressure. To solve these serious issues children at a very young age must be given the freedom to develop without stereotypes or judgement. Check out the full article on this for more info!!
http://www.everydayhealth.com/emotional-health/gender-differences-in-emotional-health.aspx Many times people stereotype mental illness, thinking that it is something very visible, however, by definition a mental disorder is anything that alters your mood, thinking, and behavior. The symptoms of mental illness can vary, treatments can also carry. Some simple steps can be taken at home to reduce the worsening of mental illness. These steps are, sticking to your treatment plan that has been instructed by a doctor, avoid alcohol and drug use, stay active, avoid making serious or important decisions when symptoms are severe, determine your priorities, and learn to adopt a positive attitude. When following these steps at home in your every day life mental illness can be lessened greatly. To look more closely at symptoms and how to get help check out the link below!
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mental-illness/basics/lifestyle-home-remedies/con-20033813 The United States is in desperate need of a scientific push for the causes of premature birth and in ways to prevent it. As of now doctors believe that if the US as a whole follow 5 seemingly simple steps premature birth rates could be reduced by 8% by the year 2015. Recent studies show that the premature birth rate for the United States is 11.5%, making it very possible for our country as a whole to get down to 8%. Many of us need to consider why we should care and why we should make this push. This push needs to be made to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy youth for our country. I personally take this very seriously because I have seen the effects premature birth can have on people. I will be talking to local doctors in the neonatal unit to further understand how Vermont achieved the goal of having the lowest premature birth rates in the country.
1. Eliminating the option of inducing labor or C-section. 2. Providing women with the facilities and support to quit smoking. 3. To get started on a healthy pregnancy follow these easy steps, link to these steps will be posted below, check it out! Providing regular injections of the hormone progesterone to certain women at high risk, largely because of a prior preterm birth.4. Putting a stitch into the cervix of certain high-risk women, those who have what's called a short cervix. 5. Using just one embryo, not multiples, when in vitro fertilization is used. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/11/16/steps-can-be-taken-to-reduce-preterm-births-report-claims/ Every 1 in 8 births is premature in the United States, so how do we as a country reduce this high premature birth rate? As a capstone project I will be researching what steps must be taken to reduce this as a country, and I will also research how Vermont received the lowest premature birth rate in the country.
